Exclusive photos reveal three new well pads in Union Township, northeastern Washington County, Pennsylvania, ready for EQT to drill and hydraulically fracture.

The first Marcellus Shale well in Union Township was drilled by Chesapeake at Trax Farm. EQT took over the lease and returned to drill additional wells.

Caton, Mingo, Sarah and Trax well pads in Union Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania. Allegheny County is located to the north, and across the Monongahela River to the east.

An earlier Act 14 Notice showed this schematic, indicating that over 50 wells would eventually be situated in three rows on the well pad. If they were to drill and frac 5 wells at a time, they would have to return more than 10 times.

Following Chesapeake’s initial drilling, EQT returned several years later to drill and frac additional wells.

On June 3, the Independent Fiscal Office reported shale gas production in Pennsylvania dropped from 1,939 billion cubic feet in the fourth quarter of 2023 to 1,881 billion cubic feet in the first quarter of 2024.

Major shale gas producers like Chesapeake Energy, EQT and others announced plans to intentionally reduce production in hopes of increasing the price of gas.

The number of new shale gas wells also dropped slightly from 110 in the fourth quarter to 100 in the first quarter of 2024.

The price of natural gas in Pennsylvania was unchanged from the fourth quarter at $1.69 per MMBtu (million British thermal units).

The price, however, represents a 24.9% drop from the first quarter in 2023 due to changes in the international price of natural gas.
